▶ Measurement Category (CAT) – What does it mean?
The CAT rating of a multimeter indicates the electrical environment for which it is safely designed. It describes not only the maximum voltage, but above all the impulse withstand capability — i.e. how well the device fails safely in the event of a sudden energy surge (e.g. arc flash or short circuit) instead of becoming dangerous.
| Category | Typical Application |
|---|---|
| CAT II | Household appliances, socket outlets (load side) |
| CAT III | Distribution boards, fixed installations |
| CAT IV | Service entrance, utility meters, overhead lines |
Important: A device with an insufficient CAT rating can fail dangerously in a higher category environment — even if the rated voltage is identical. The selection of the correct CAT rating is the responsibility of the user and should comply with applicable safety regulations. Please verify which CAT rating is required for your measurement environment before use.
